Back in July I sent out an email to let you know that the Governmental
Accounting Standards Board (GASB) is expanding its post-graduate
internship program to include students from public administration
programs. A mailing has just been sent to public administration and
public affairs programs with information about how to nominate students
graduating this fall or next spring for consideration. Students should
have a strong interest in public finance and public financial
management.

I wanted to give you a heads-up about the mailing, which is being sent
to the director of graduate studies, department chairman, or similar
person in each of the programs listed on NASPAA's Web site. If you would
like to see the materials that have been sent, email me and I will
gladly email them to you.

We have slots for postgraduate technical assistants (as we call them)
for January-December 2007 and July 2007-June 2008. The PTAs are active
participants in the work of the GASB-performing research related to one
or more standards-setting projects, participating in the drafting of
standards and the collection and analysis of public comment, and
assisting governments with understanding and implementing new standards.
It is a rare opportunity to see the process of establishing accounting
and financial reporting standards up close and to learn about
governmental accounting and public finance in general. Recent PTAs
played an integral role in GASB projects on derivatives, pollution
remediation obligations, intangible assets, and fund balance reporting.
The internships are paid positions with benefits.
