The Department of Political Science at Idaho State University is seeking a teacher-scholar for a tenure track appointment at Assistant Professor in the field of public administration and a second field in political science. The starting date is Fall 2009. The teaching load is a two-three. This teaching load consists of a mix of introductory, upper division, and graduate courses. A reduced first year teaching load is negotiable. The position requires teaching our undergraduate Introduction to American Government course. At the upper division and graduate levels, our primary needs are in public administration and a second field in American politics, international relations, environmental politics or other fields in political science. We are looking for a public administration generalist to teach in our Master of Public Administration program. The MPA program has 30 students and graduates 10-13 students a year. The position is open to specialization, but the ability to teach such courses as public administration ethics, public personnel, budgeting, non-profit management, general management, and environmental administration are plus factors. A second area of political science (such as American politics, international relations, environmental policy or administration) is necessary to be able to teach in the department’s undergraduate and other graduate programs. In addition, our department has a strong environmental emphasis and teaching and scholarship in this area is a plus-factor.
In both application and interview, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate (a) knowledge of theories, methods, and research in public administration and political science, (b) evidence of teaching excellence, and (c) evidence of excellence in research and scholarship. Candidates are expected to have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, a research agenda and public record, and perform professional and public service. In addition, the ability to secure external research funding will be considered in the selection process.
A doctorate in political science is preferred, but ABDs will be considered. The salary range is commensurate with education and experience. Our benefits package is competitive. The Department of Political Science at ISU has 130 undergraduate majors and 65 graduate students in our MA, MPA, and doctoral programs. Idaho State University is located in Pocatello (a metropolitan area of 65,000) and is a regional university with an enrollment of 13,200 students. The area offers tremendous outdoor recreational opportunities and is a two hour drive from Sun Valley, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, and Salt Lake City.
Interested applicants should send a letter of interest detailing qualifications for the position, a curriculum vitae, graduate transcripts, three professional reference letters (with reference contact information), evidence of teaching ability and teaching philosophy, course syllabi, and evidence of research and publications to: Wayne Gabardi, Chair, Department of Political Science, Campus Box 8073, Idaho State University, Pocatello, ID 83209-8073. Fax (208) 282-4833. Application materials should be submitted by October 10, 2008. We will, however, review files received after this date.
