Call for Proposals
2008 PAT-Net Conference
21st Annual Meeting of the Public Administration Theory Network
May 29 - 30, 2008
Virginia Commonwealth University
Richmond, Virginia

Public Administration at the Margin

The Public Administration Theory Network, in cooperation with Virginia
Commonwealth University, invite proposals for discursive sessions
exploring issues and ideas related to marginalization in public
administration theory and
practice. The 2008 Conference seeks dialogue on the undiscovered and
invisible, the
dispossessed and disposable, the marginalized and the disappeared. Is public
administration as a discipline marginal to present-day social and
political thought and consciousness? Should public administration
embrace the role of advocate for the dispossessed? Can public
administration open paths for inclusion of the marginalized Other, not
merely as a support for social justice? Can public administration resist
ideological totalitarianism, address practical difficulties in engaging
diverse backgrounds, and counter American exceptionalism or Othering
derived from ethnocentrism and xenophobia? What greater achievements
could be realized by paradigms that include the marginalized?

In pursuit of innovative and provocative discourse we encourage the
opening of theoretic and communicative boundaries. While continuing to
support traditional paper presentations, we encourage scholars to
consider proposals that create
alternative spaces for dialogue and interaction distinct from the
traditional conference
format. Diverse approaches might include (but are not limited to)
roundtables, debates,
drama, cinema, poetry or visual arts.

While seeking proposals on the theme of marginalization, we equally
welcome an open stream of papers, panels, performances, and
collaborative activities of
importance to public administration theorists.

Submit your proposal to Catherine Horiuchi, cmhoriuchi at usfca.edu. Please
include:

• The title and type of the proposal
  (paper, panel, roundtable, dialogue, performance)
• Name(s), affiliation(s), and email information for authors/participants
• A single page summary of the proposal and, if desired,
  its contribution to conference topics

Papers completed and submitted on time will follow a double blind
referee process prior to posting on the conference website when
accepted, with authors’ approval.
